2008 "Emergency Preparedness" Fundraiser

RATS is raising funds for the backup antennas and APRS node at Channel 23. Please click here to find out more and to donate!

The Richmond Amateur Telecommunications Society, club callsign W4RAT, is based in the Virginia capitol city of Richmond. RATS is a Central Virignia ARRL- and SERA-affiliated radio club with VHF and UHF repeaters in service. We hold monthly meetings, open to members and guests.

Our repeaters and IRLP Nodes are open to all amateur radio operators holding the appropriate license class to operate on 2 meters (146.88MHz -600KHz offset) and 70 centimeters (442.55MHz +5MHz offset). Both repeaters use full CTCSS encoding/decoding at 74.4Hz (formerly called PL). Full use of the autopatch and telemetry functions requires RATS membership. We are also adding APRS digipeaters around the Richmond metro area. More information on W4RAT APRS is here.

RATS was founded in 1972 to further the art and science of radio communications. We invite you to join us at our meetings, to utilize our repeaters, and to become part of our organization!

Field Day Information

RATS is leading up the effort to provide communications support for the annual Heart of Virginia Bike Ride, sponsored by the Richmond Area Bicycling Association (RABA) on September 13 and 14, 2008. We need about 24 amateurs to fully staff the headquarters station, 4 rest stops each day, and the 4 SAG wagons (vehicles - theirs, not ours) that follow the riders providing support. On Friday, we will meet to set up at the Patrick Henry YMCA in Ashland which is the headquarters for the event, and will house our net control station. Beginning at 5:00AM on Saturday morning, we will staff 3 rest stops (by moving from one to another after the riders have passed), and ride shotgun with the 4 SAG wagons. We also intend to shadow Bud Vie, the person in charge of the event. We should be done by 5:00PM Saturday, then will staff another set of rest stops and SAG wagons from 5:00AM until 3:00PM on Sunday. We've broken the days up into shifts to make it easier to volunteer and feel tied up all day long. If you can volunteer, please go to this link
